Hawkins, Cynthia Jean "Cindy" Bontrager
September 14, 1964 - May 8, 2024
Cynthia "Cindy" Jean Hawkins, 59, of Middlebury, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday May 8th [2024] at 10:45pm. Cindy was diagnosed with glioblastoma (brain cancer) in June of 2023, and continued treatments until April 2024 when she entered hospice care in her home, where she passed peacefully surrounded by family.
Cindy was born on September 14, 1964 in Goshen to Lloyd and Bertha (Yoder) Bontrager. Cindy grew up in the same home where she passed away. This home is where she enjoyed a bright childhood filled with much love and laughter. Cindy graduated from Bethany Christian High School (1982) and Hesston College (1984) and Goshen College (1994) with her degree in physical education.
When Cindy was 21, she lost her father and younger brother in a tragic airplane accident on April 7, 1985. This was a pivotal time in her life learning how to trust God as she walked through grief alongside her mom and her other family members, as a loving daughter and sister.
In her high school years, she caught Dave Hawkins’ eye while cruising in downtown Goshen. A dead car battery for Cindy and her friends led to Dave stopping to help. This led to dating throughout high school and college. Dave and Cindy were married on August 2nd, 1986 at Clinton Frame Mennonite Church. They had their first child, Allison Jae, in 1987, followed by Mitchell David in 1990, Kevin Robert in 1994, and Abigail Jean in 1998. Cindy loved being a mom and poured into her children in many ways; driving her kids all over Elkhart County to school and to sports and extracurricular activities. She was committed to nurturing their love for Jesus and the church, encouraging positivity and resiliency in each of her children. She did this by keeping an organized home and schedule, developing positive sibling relationships, demonstrating unconditional love, and drying their eyes through difficult emotions, moments and several injuries. She allowed each of her kids to spread their wings in unique ways to find fulfilling lives into adulthood. She cared for and loved her children deeply, she also loved the “outlaws” (in-laws) whom her kids brought into the family and the 6 (almost 7) grandchildren who will continue to hear stories of mimi and her nurturing spirit. Cindy loved being a “mimi”, and adored her grandkids.
Cindy worked at Jayco for several years in various positions, including the Employee Wellness Director where she designed, opened, and managed the innovative Wellness Center and employee wellness program. She also enjoyed working with youth; having spent many years organizing the recreation for the national church youth conventions, coaching volleyball at Bethany Christian (sharing her love of the sport with her daughters, Abbi and Alli), and serving as interim youth pastor at Clinton Frame Church from 2021 to 2023. She was an excellent blogger and word-smith, documenting many hilarious and heartfelt stories on her blog “Life on Amish Highway 35”. Cindy loved traveling, and took Dave on many adventures around the world. Dave and Cindy enjoyed many Florida sunsets together and were a demonstration of true love, after 38 years of marriage.
Hospitality was always one of her love languages-whether it was with family or friends. She loved having a full kitchen table, lots of shoes at the door, and love and laughter filling her home. When her children were still at home, she enjoyed having the kids’ friends come over. They were always welcomed with delicious food, a full pantry, cereal and milk, and lots of love and smiles. As her children aged and started their own families, Cindy took a lot of pride in hosting Mondays at Moms-an evening gathering of the family to fellowship together. Cindy’s love was unconditional and evident in the relationships she built with people across all generations.
Cindy loved Jesus and was a committed follower of Christ. She demonstrated this faith through the life she lived and the way she loved and cared for others. She was a committed member of Clinton Frame Church for 45 years and a loyal Christ-follower. She quickly learned to trust and lean on God to lead her through the dark valleys of life. She always thanked Him for the blessings in her life.
During her cancer diagnosis, Cindy received phenomenal care from all her medical teams. These great providers included the ER group in Anchorage, Alaska, the medical team and nurses at Malnati Brain Tumor Institute at Northwestern Medicine in Chicago, doctors and nurses at the hospitals in Florida, the oncology and palliative care teams at Goshen Center for Cancer Care, and medical providers at Goshen Hospital. The Center for Hospice Care provided excellent and compassionate care for Cindy during the last 5 weeks of her life here on this earth. God has provided many blessings to Cindy and her family during this journey. Thank you to our entire community for loving Cindy and the Hawkins family so well. We are so grateful for your love, prayers and support, and for sharing all the ways Cindy has impacted many of you in the most beautiful ways.
There are many lives that Cindy touched and her legacy will continue on in many large and small ways. Her legacy will be carried on by surviving family members; including her husband, David Hawkins, two daughters, Alli (Kyle) Stiffney of Goshen, Abbi (Ian) Bomberger of Middlebury; two sons, Mitch (Lydia) Hawkins of Middlebury, Kevin (Alaina) Hawkins of Middlebury; her grandchildren, Mara, Kailyn, Jack, Carson, Sloane Cynthia, Hayden, and one more grandchild on the way; her mother, Bertha Bontrager-Rhodes of Middlebury; three brothers, Wilbur (Sarah) Bontrager of Middlebury, Derald (Cindy) Bontrager of Bristol, Don (Tina) Bontrager of Goshen; a sister, Julie (Terry) Diener of Goshen. She was preceded in death by her father and brother, Wendall Bontrager on April 7, 1985 and her step father, Jay Rhodes, on March 8, 2020.
Visitation is planned for Saturday, May 11th, 4-7pm and Sunday, May 12th, 1-4pm and 6-8pm at Clinton Frame Church, Goshen. The family will hold a private graveside service at Miller 8 Square Cemetery, prior to a celebration of life service at 6:00 pm on Monday, May 13th also at the church. The celebration of life service will be live-streamed through Clinton Frame's Youtube channel, @ClintonFrameChurch.
Services will be conducted by Pastor Terry Diener, Cindy’s brother-in-law, and Pastor Sebastiano Rosa from Clinton Frame Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Glioblastoma Research Organization (www.gbmresearch.org/donate). Assisting with the arrangement is Miller-Stewart Funeral home.

Irene suffered much but not in vain, as she was filling up in her flesh what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ (Col. 1:24). Her many surgeries for various reasons and especially her battle with cancer over the past 7 or 8 years were used to prepare her and those around her for glory. Her favorite Bible verse was Is. 41:10: “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will also help you, I will also uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Hess, Homer G.

Homer G. Hess, known for his devoted dedication to his family, artistic talent, and unwavering commitment to farming, passed away on May 1, 2024. Born in Lancaster, Homer was the son of the late Norman and Anna (Groff) Hess.

Their bond was unbreakable, leading to a beautiful marriage that lasted 69 years. Homer and Dorothy started a dairy farm in the late 1950's that continues in the family to this day. Later in life, when Homer stepped back from working with the cows, he really demonstrated having a green thumb by his bountiful garden and beautiful house plants and flowers.
Though farming was his profession, Homer's artistic flair shone brightly through his intricate drawings, which adorned cards sent to family and friends, showcasing the love he had for others. His kind and selfless nature was a cornerstone of his being, placing the needs of those around him above his own. He was a devout member of the Bossler Mennonite Church.

Holland, Christina Weidenbauer
July 20, 1964 - June 5, 2024
Christina (Weidenbauer) Holland passed away on Tuesday, June 5, 2024, at 59 years of age. She left behind a legacy of love, energy, and generosity that will live on in the community.
Chris was born on July 20, 1964, in Neuburg a.d. Donau, Germany, and lived in Nesselwang, Germany, until the age of 20. She relocated to Fayette, OH, on March 24, 1985, to work on a dairy farm, in conjunction with Cobra Select Sires. She was offered a job with Cobra Select Sires, but instead ended up at Sauder Manufacturing in Stryker, OH, building prototypes.
Perhaps her most famous work was as a bus driver for Pettisville Local Area Schools. She drove the 70-passenger school bus for 17 years, leaving a legacy of good deeds, caring, and love. Even over ten years after she left the profession, the now-grown children she used to ferry to and from school will still talk about the kindness and joy she brought to every ride. She considered every student her child, and was indeed considered to be a mother to everyone.
After her bus driving career, she became a State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA) working first for Fairlawn Retirement Community in Archbold, OH, and then at Passionate Care Inc. Senior In-Home Care, serving all of Fulton Co., OH. Chris brought the same compassion and energy to assistant nursing as she did to bus driving, and is still remembered fondly by her patients – especially her “snowball backrubs” and other pranks on her geriatric patients.
Outside of her working life, Chris led an active and enriching life. All who knew her would say she never sat still. Chris served as the head advisor of the Countryside Clovers 4-H Club in Archbold, OH, for 20 years, and as the poultry advisor for the Eveready 4-H Club in Pettisville, OH, for ten years. She was a board member of the Five County Farm Bureau association for 15 years. She is particularly famous at the Farm Bureau for her Carrot Project, where she organized volunteers from across multiple counties to collect, clean, and bag 180,000 pounds of leftover carrots that were destined to rot and shipped them to food banks all over Ohio.
Chris also brought her farm work home, to what she dubbed the “Family Circus Farm”. There she raised cows, rabbits, and 4,000 chickens. However, Chris was an equestrian at heart, and she especially adored her horse, Christie, and her pony, Tony.
While Chris loved farming, she wasn’t such a fan of gardening, as she preferred to spend her time with horses and people rather than tending a garden. She did however grow rhubarb and currant berries along the south side of her home in Archbold, OH. She was especially proud of her heritage rhubarb, which was deep ruby red and which friends regularly stopped by to pick. She loved cooking, as evidenced by the bookshelf of cookbooks in her kitchen. With her home-grown currant berries and rhubarb, she would make her famous rhubarb crunch and currant berry jam. She is also remembered for her tomato sauce (made from scratch and canned at home), her cheese danishes, and her spetzle and rouladen, traditional German meals that harkened back to her childhood.
Chris was an accomplished quilter; she has made 17 of her own quilts and contributed to innumerable community quilts. She also worked as a community volunteer at Threads of Tradition, the quilt shop in Historic Sauder Village.
Chris married Bruce Holland on December 27, 1986. They met when a mutual friend invited Bruce to the music store where Chris took lessons. They were together six months before they married, and they celebrated their 37th anniversary in 2023. They had two sons: Michael, 34, and Benjamin, 32.
Chris became a United States citizen on August 13, 1993.
It is well known that Chris was the lifeforce of Fulton County. She was the first to offer a kind word, a piece of advice, or a swift kick in the butt – depending upon what you needed at the time. She was as protective as a mama bear when one of her children was threatened – whether biological or not. She was tough, kind, fierce, and gentle. She brought sunshine to everyone she met, and her light will continue to shine on for years to come.
Chris is survived by her mother, Anna Weidenbauer; her husband, Bruce Holland; her son Michael and his wife Jennifer; her son Benjamin and his partner Krystyanna; her sisters Anja (Robert) Henge and their children Regina and Larissa and Evelyn (Cristoff) Weidenbauer; her sister-in-law Colleen (Jon) Rufenacht; her brother-in-law Brent (Shonna) Holland; her nieces Jill Holland Conrad, Lindsey Holland Lange, Jessica Tingley, and Katrina Yates; her grand-nieces Allison Conrad, Rose Lange, Violet Lange, Jocelyn Yates, Autumn Yates, and Katelyn Kinsey; and her grand-nephews Luke Conrad, Izaak Conrad, Hudson Lange, and Zachary Tingley.
Chris will be interred at Evergreen Cemetery in Ransom, MI. A viewing will be held on Monday, June 10, 2024, from 4:00pm-8:00pm at Tedrow Mennonite Church and the funeral will be held on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, at 11:00am, also at Tedrow Mennonite Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Mennonite Central Committee.
